9 Mile River Trails
On a sunny Sunday afternoon, I set out to hike on the 9 Mile River Trails system.
The trail system is located in Enfield, N.S.
Directions from Halifax:
Take the NS-102 until Exit 7. Turn right onto NS Trunk 2N. Turn left onto Enfield Road/Old Enfield Road. Drive for 8 km and then you will see the large sign for the trails.
There are three trails within the trail system:
1. The Comeau Lake trail 3.1 km in length.( so 6.2 km in total) This trail winds down wooded gravel paths and across small wooden walkways to a small but beautiful lake.
2. The Pitcher Plant trail-1.3 km ( circular trail) a pleasant small trail with blueberries along the trail. We looked but did not see any pitcher plants.
3. The Hemlock Cathedral Trail 3.1 km circular trail.
Overall impressions:
The trail system was very well maintained and in fact, on the day that we were there, there were two people working on an area of the trail. The walkways are mostly gravel or hard ground. There are some tree roots and rocks to maneuver around here and there but the trail is quite easy to walk on. There are some ramps set up in a couple of places for bikers and there is mountain biking on the trail.
The signage is excellent and the trail is well marked.
There are no bathrooms.
There are benches along the trail for anyone wanting to rest or sit and listen to the birdsong in the high trees. We spotted a snake, frogs and squirrels and heard a symphony of birds singing happily in the tall trees.
There is a large parking lot and maps are available to take with you.
We would definitely return to the trails! We loved our time there!
